In His Dreams

Tue Jul 02 2019

I can hear your breathing, so I know you're okay, sweet giant.

Yet I wonder why you dream so loudly, why your leg runs but your body stays.
Your wrist pivots, and your tail flicks,
and it's almost as though I may hear the rabbit whose flesh you crave,
or do you dream of daytime TV?

Lately though you've begun to howl,
and with a howl so loud it pierced through even
the insulation of my dreams,
you woke me.
And now, sweet giant,
though I fear your answer already,
I have to ask:
do dogs have nightmares too?
